With Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour Party having won the 2024 general election in a landslide victory, what could this mean for international trade?

In this blog, we take a look at the key points from Labour’s manifesto which should give us a good idea as to what lies ahead.

Rebuilding EU relationship

The manifesto pledges to keep the UK out of the EU, its customs union and its single market. It does, however, state that the Labour Party will “make Brexit work” by seeking to “improve the UK’s trade and investment relationship with the EU by tearing down unnecessary barriers to trade”.

An example of this is Labour’s plan to negotiate a veterinary agreement to ease border checks and secure mutual recognition of professional qualifications.

New trade agreements

Labour plans to negotiate new trade agreements, including a strategic partnership with India, covering free trade and deeper cooperation in areas like security, education, technology, and climate change. They also intend to pursue standalone sector deals, such as for digital services, to promote UK exports.

Defence sector

Another of Labour’s export priorities is the exploration of trade opportunities within the defence sector. To capitalise on these opportunities, Labour emphasises the importance of ensuring resilient supply chains. The manifesto states:

“We will ensure a strong defence sector and resilient supply chains, including steel, across the whole of the UK. We will establish long-term partnerships between business and government, promote innovation, and improve resilience.”

The manifesto also explicitly highlights export opportunities in the defence sector, emphasising that these must be conducted in compliance with international law:

“We will prioritise UK businesses for defence investment and will reform procurement to reduce waste. Labour will support industry to benefit from export opportunities, in line with a robust arms export regime committed to upholding international law.”

Net-zero

The Labour Party’s manifesto outlined a comprehensive plan to achieve net zero by 2050, with a major focus on making the UK a “clean energy superpower” by 2030.

A key feature of Labour’s manifesto is the establishment of Great British Energy, a new publicly-owned clean energy company designed to drive investment in renewable energy technologies. This initiative is bolstered by an £8.3 billion government investment.

Labour has set ambitious clean energy targets, aiming to “double onshore wind, triple solar power, and quadruple offshore wind by 2030.” Furthermore, they plan to invest in carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, and marine energy, which are crucial for developing the UK’s long-term energy storage infrastructure.

An essential part of this strategy is Labour’s commitment to lifting the effective ban on new onshore wind developments. By reforming planning regulations, the party aims to more than double onshore wind capacity to 35GW by 2030.

With Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour Party winning the 2024 general election, the future of international trade could see significant changes. Here at Mosaic International, we will be keeping a close eye on any developments surrounding international trade.

In December 2023, COP28 concluded with a historic agreement that echoed a resounding call for the ‘beginning of the end’ of the fossil fuel era[1]. The global stocktake emerged as the central outcome, providing a comprehensive framework for nations to develop robust climate action plans by 2025. Mosaic International, a leading business consultancy, offers a keen insight into the implications of this landmark decision, especially for UK SMEs.

Global Stocktake and Climate Goals

The COP28 stocktake underscores the urgent need for a 43% reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 to limit global warming to 1.5°C. However, the acknowledgment that countries are currently off track in meeting their Paris Agreement goals highlights the gravity of the situation.

Resilience and Loss & Damage Fund

The conference commenced with the World Climate Action Summit, leading to a historic agreement on the operationalisation of the loss and damage fund and funding arrangements. Over USD 700 million in commitments have been made to date, marking a significant step towards helping countries strengthen resilience to the impacts of climate change.

Climate Finance Opportunities

COP28 witnessed substantial commitments to climate finance, including a boost to the Green Climate Fund’s second replenishment, reaching a record USD 12.8 billion from 31 countries. For small businesses, this opens new funding opportunities, particularly for those focused on climate adaptation, resilience, and sustainable practices.

Carbon Markets and Small Businesses

While no agreement was reached on carbon markets due to concerns around supervision and accounting, the issue remains critical for businesses seeking vibrant and high-integrity carbon markets. This unresolved matter emphasises the need for continued discussions at COP29.

Implications for UK SMEs

Climate Finance and Funding Opportunities

The establishment of the Loss and Damage Fund and other financial pledges could provide a crucial lifeline for UK SMEs, not only offering opportunities to access funding for climate adaptation, resilience, and sustainable practices but also allowing businesses to identify the benefits of adopting a net-zero strategy.

With the support of Mosaic International, this strategic shift enables SMEs to access carbon credits, reduce dependence on the national grid, and engage in responsible practices such as recycling, reusing, and repurposing. By embracing these elements, businesses can not only secure financial support but also create a more sustainable and environmentally conscious operation, fostering a positive and increasingly favourable reputation in the market.

Market Shifts and Consumer Trends

Amidst global policies emphasising sustainability, SMEs can align with the surging consumer demand for eco-friendly products and services. Embracing greener practices not only situates businesses in the burgeoning sustainability market but also positions them to attract environmentally conscious consumers.

At Mosaic International, our expertise can guide your business transformation, addressing the challenges of a fiercely competitive market while unlocking the competitive advantages inherent in embracing net-zero initiatives.

Networking and Collaboration

COP28 has underscored the importance of collective action. UK SMEs can benefit from networking, joining industry alliances, and collaborating on sustainability initiatives to amplify their impact and stay abreast of evolving environmental standards. By doing nothing you risk losing out to your competitors who gain a reputation for ‘doing the right thing.’ If you need further support, Mosaic International can help.

Mosaic International’s Role

Mosaic International, with its focus on helping businesses achieve net zero and implement sustainable supply chain management, stands at the forefront of guiding SMEs through these transitions. Offering services ranging from understanding net zero implications to providing transformational leadership, we are a key partner for businesses looking to navigate the changing landscape.

As the world collectively moves towards a sustainable future, UK SMEs must embrace the opportunities emerging from COP28. Mosaic International’s expertise in net zero procedures and supply chain management position us as a valuable resource for businesses seeking guidance in this transformative era.

To embark on your Net Zero journey, contact Mosaic International today.

In the ever-evolving landscape of global business, the concept of sustainability has taken centre stage. At the forefront of this movement are the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals – a set of 17 objectives aimed at addressing the world’s most pressing challenges by 2030[1]. Among these goals, Sustainable Development Goal 13 stands out as a beacon, calling for urgent action to combat climate change and its far-reaching impacts.

Understanding SDG 13: Combatting climate change

Sustainable Development Goal 13[2], established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, emphasises the imperative to combat climate change. Its mission is clear: take urgent action to address the environmental challenges threatening our planet’s future. Climate change is a global issue, and addressing it requires a collaborative effort from businesses, governments, and individuals alike.

This is where we come in at Mosaic International, serving as a key player in guiding businesses toward a sustainable and resilient future. Our focus on Net Zero strategies aligns seamlessly with Sustainable Development Goal 13, as we actively work towards limiting and adapting to the impacts of climate change.

The interconnected web of sustainability goals

At Mosaic International, we recognise that the pursuit of Net Zero is not just about reducing carbon emissions but is a holistic approach that intertwines with multiple Sustainable Development Goals.

For instance, transitioning to renewable energy sources (Sustainable Development Goal 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy[3]) not only reduces emissions but also fosters job creation and economic growth (Sustainable Development Goal 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth[4]). Furthermore, sustainable agricultural practices, another aspect of the Net Zero journey, contribute to Sustainable Development Goal 2[5] (Zero Hunger) and Sustainable Development Goal 15[6] (Life on Land).

Legislation: Navigating the future landscape

In an era where sustainability is not just a buzzword but a necessity, businesses face an imminent need to adapt to changing legislation. We understand that future-proofing your business involves staying ahead of the regulatory curve. With increased taxation and potential penalties for non-compliance looming, the embrace of Net Zero strategies becomes not only an ethical choice but a business imperative.

The emphasis on adapting to changing legislation, future-proofing businesses, and embracing Net Zero strategies aligns with the broader objective of addressing climate change and promoting sustainability in Sustainable Development Goal 13[7].

Mosaic International’s approach to crafting a Net Zero future

At Mosaic International, we distinguish ourselves by offering comprehensive solutions to businesses aiming to embark on their Net Zero journey. Our localised supplier audits, covering specific issues or the entire supplier system, ensure that businesses are prepared for the challenges of a sustainable future.

In Sustainable Development Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns[8], the focus on local supplier audits, sustainability challenges, and meticulous analysis of various aspects (from physical premises visits to cybersecurity controls) aligns with the goal of ensuring responsible consumption and production.

The collaboration between Mosaic International and businesses to create impactful action plans reflects the importance of partnerships to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 17: Global Partnership for Sustainable Development[9].
Taking the first step on your journey

Our commitment to sustainability is exemplified through our focus on helping businesses analyse current carbon emissions, identify the benefits of Net Zero strategies, and transform their operations for a competitive advantage. By embracing sustainability, businesses can access carbon credits, reduce dependence on the national grid, and enhance their reputation as responsible entities.

In a world where every business will be affected by the Net Zero transition, we at Mosaic International position ourselves as guides, helping businesses navigate the complexities of new legislation and emerging environmental standards.

A sustainable future with Mosaic International

Understanding its impact on UK businesses and preparing for a Net Zero future with Mosaic International

As the world collectively takes action to combat climate change, various measures are being introduced to promote sustainable practices and reduce carbon emissions. One such measure gaining traction is the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)[1]. This mechanism is designed to tackle the issue of carbon leakage and level the playing field for businesses operating within and outside the UK.

In this blog, we will explore what CBAM is, its implications for UK businesses, and how Mosaic International’s net zero offering can play a vital role in navigating this transformative landscape.

What is the CBAM?

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, also known as Carbon Border Adjustment or CBAM, is an initiative aimed at ensuring that the carbon pricing applied to domestically produced goods is also applied to imports from countries with less stringent emission reduction policies.

By doing so, CBAM intends to prevent “carbon leakage,” which occurs when businesses relocate production to countries with weaker environmental regulations, ultimately undermining global efforts to combat climate change.[2]

How does CBAM relate to UK businesses?

For UK businesses, CBAM has significant implications, both in terms of challenges and opportunities. As the UK is committed to achieving its ambitious net-zero emissions target by 2050[3], CBAM can help safeguard domestic industries from unfair competition and prevent the offshoring of emissions-intensive processes to countries with lax environmental regulations.

However, it also means that businesses exporting to the EU or other countries implementing similar measures will need to prepare for new carbon-related requirements. It could potentially lead to additional costs for businesses that do not meet stringent carbon standards, making it crucial for companies to align their operations with sustainable practices and reduce carbon footprints.

What UK businesses need to be aware of

UK businesses should be aware that CBAM is likely to have a significant impact on their operations, especially if they engage in international trade. Some key points to consider are:

Emission Reporting and Verification

Exporters may need to provide detailed carbon emission reports for their products, and these reports might need third-party verification to ensure accuracy and compliance.

Carbon Pricing

Companies might be subjected to carbon pricing on their exported products, which could increase costs for non-compliant businesses.

Supply Chain Management

Our MD, Kiley Tan, is conducting a survey of Yorkshire based manufacturers as part of his MBA at The University of Sheffield titled titled ‘Net Zero Preparedness of Yorkshire Manufacturing SME’

Climate change is the biggest challenge of our lifetime

According to scientists at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), global temperature increase must be limited to no more than 1.5°C to preserve our current way of life. This can only be realised if the world can achieve carbon net zero by 2050. In recent years and despite pledges by governments across the world, carbon emissions globally have increased rather than decrease.

The UK have pledged to be carbon net-zero by 2050 but in order to accomplish this goal, it is likely that all parts of the economy (including SMEs) will have to undertake initiatives to measure, minimise and offset their carbon emissions. Currently, only listed and larger companies have obligations to do so.

The research I am conducting is to determine how Yorkshire based manufacturing SMEs are dealing with net zero, how prepared they are, their source of information, their drivers and constraints for achieving net zero and whether they are measuring carbon emissions in their supply chain. By completing the survey, you can contribute to an overall picture of what can be done to accelerate net zero within the industry, in the region, and beyond.

Your response matters

These are complex issues, but I believe solutions must be found. At stake is not simply profitability and continued success of manufacturing in the region but the world as we know it today.

The survey can be found here

It will take 10 – 15 minutes to complete.

Please feel free to forward this survey to your contacts in other manufacturing SMEs in Yorkshire.

If you have any questions arising from the survey, please do not hesitate to contact Kiley at kbttan1@sheffield.ac.uk or 07885 784783

Thank you again for your attention and participation.
